Applications for the retention, licensing, and permitting of operations for the year 2026 will commence on December 1, 2025. A valid KVB practice license is a prerequisite for obtaining a manufacturing permit, wholesaler dealer license, or retail pharmacy license. All dealers engaged in the trade of feed additives are required to possess a wholesale dealer license.

About Us

The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) is a new agency tasked with regulating the manufacture, importation, exportation, registration, distribution, prescription and dispensing of veterinary medicines and other animal health products in Kenya. VMD was established pursuant to CAP 366 (article 39) of the laws of Kenya.

Veterinary Pesticides

Products such as vaccines, toxoids, antisera and antigens used for prevention and treatment of diseases in animals.

Alternative & Non-Conventional Medicines

Products that are natural, complementary or alternatives to conventional veterinary medicines

Equipment & Devices

Equipment used for administration of veterinary medicines or for treatment and diagnosis of animal diseases.

Biocidal

Chemicals used to control microorganisms (viruses, bacteria and fungus) on the body or animals or in the animal environment.

Feed Additives

Substances, micro-organisms or preparations, other than feed material and premixtures, which are intentionally added to feed or water in order to favourably change the characteristics of feed. Examples are nutrients, preservatives, flavours and coloring agents.

Licensed Premises

Use of any premises, for the purposes of manufacturing, formulating, packaging, selling or storing of veterinary medicines MUST be inspected and licensed. These licenses are renewed annually.

Manufacturers

This is a person or company authorised by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate, that produces finished veterinary products from raw materials by using various tools, equipment, and processes, which also may include repackaging, repacking or labeling and then sells the goods to consumers, wholesalers, distributors, retailers, or to other manufacturers for the production of more complex goods.

Wholesalers

This is a company or individual authorised by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate that purchases great quantities of products from authorised manufacturers, and vendors.They deal with bulk storage and supply of veterinary medicines in unbroken packages.

Retailers

This is a company permitted by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate, that buys products from a manufacturer or wholesaler, display and sale of opened packages to end users or customers.
