Who we are

VMD Overview 

The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) is a new agency tasked with regulating the manufacture, importation, exportation, registration, distribution, prescription and dispensing of veterinary medicines and other animal health products in Kenya.

VMD was established pursuant to CAP 366 (article 39) of the laws of Kenya. The Directorate will endeavor to implement the appropriate regulatory measures to achieve the highest standards of safety, efficacy and quality for veterinary pharmaceuticals, immunologicals, animal pesticides and feed ingredients as well as other animal health products, locally manufactured, imported, exported, distributed, sold, or used, to ensure the protection of animal health and welfare, food safety and security as well as public health and the environment  as envisaged by all laws in force in Kenya.

Vision

To be a world class regulatory body promoting the responsible, safe and effective use of Veterinary Medicines and other animal health products.

Mission

To protect public and animal health, the environment and promote animal welfare by assuring the safety, quality and effectiveness of veterinary medicines and other animal health inputs. This will be achieved through proportionate risk based regulation provision of high quality services to relevant interest groups and utilizing clear agreements with service providers. The VMD envisages regulating the manufacture, importation, exportation, registration, distribution prescription and dispensing of veterinary medicines and other animal health inputs as well as the practice of veterinary pharmacy in Kenya; and advice the Kenya Veterinary Board in relation to all the above aspects.

Management

The Management of VMD is vested on a Council appointed by the Cabinet Secretary in charge of Livestock matters pursuant to the provision of article 8 of the VMD regulations.
