Veterinary Medicines Directorate Appoints Dr. Emily Muema, PhD, as Chief Executive Officer
The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Emily Muema, PhD, as its substantive Chief Executive Officer, effective 6 July 2026. The appointment was made by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate Council following the successful conclusion of a rigorous, transparent, competitive, and merit-based recruitment process.
Dr. Muema brings over two decades of distinguished experience in public service, academia, and research. A renowned veterinary pharmacologist and toxicologist, she holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Pharmacology and Toxicology, a Master of Science in Animal Science, and a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine, all from the University of Nairobi.
Having previously served as the Acting Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Muema has demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment to the Directorate's mandate. Her substantive appointment reflects the Council's confidence in her ability to provide strategic direction, strengthen institutional performance, and lead the Directorate in promoting the quality, safety, efficacy, and responsible use of veterinary medicines and other animal health products.
The Council expressed its confidence that Dr. Muema's professional expertise, leadership, and wealth of experience will further enhance the Directorate's capacity to effectively deliver its statutory mandate and implement its strategic priorities. It also conveyed its appreciation to stakeholders, partners, and the public for their continued support and collaboration in advancing the Directorate's mission.
