Dr. Emily Muema, PhD
Ag. Chief Executive Officer

With over two decades of experience in public service, I specialize in veterinary pharmacology and toxicology. Holding a Doctor of Philosophy in Pharmacology and Toxicology, a Master of Science in Animal Science, and a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine from the esteemed University of Nairobi, my academic journey underscores my dedication to advancing veterinary medicine.

Throughout my career, I've been deeply committed to enhancing the regulation and safety of veterinary medicinal products (VMP). My pivotal role in operationalizing the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD), Kenya, involved tasks ranging from implementing the Veterinary Surgeons Veterinary Paraprofessionals Act Veterinary Medicines Directorate Regulations, 2015. I have been involved in developing policies for the directorate and spearheading the anchoring of the directorate's regulations into an Act of Parliament.

Other tasks include mapping distribution chains to facilitate trade and aligning regulations with international standards. With expertise in auditing manufacturing plants for Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and developing guidelines for pharmacovigilance, registration, and distribution of VMP, I ensure veterinary medicines' quality, safety, and efficacy.

I am passionate about teaching and research, with a focus on promoting the prudent use of antimicrobials and furthering my expertise in the toxicological effects of drugs. I aim to continue contributing significantly to the advancement of VMP through my knowledge, skills, and unwavering dedication.

Currently, the Ag. Chief Executive Officer and Secretary to the Council.
